George Eastham, Newcastle United Cover
Charles Buchan's Football Monthly Magazine - January 1958
Eastham was a player who would carve out his own place in football history but for the fans he was one third of a brilliant attacking trio of players along with Ivor Allchurch and Len White. Despite also being part of the successful England squad of 1966 it was Eastham’s eventual move from Newcastle to Arsenal that made history.
Even though his contract was at an end and Eastham made it clear he wanted to move, at the time clubs could refuse to allow a player to move to another club. Eastham went on strike and was eventually sold to Arsenal but afterwards took Newcastle to court and helped force through massive changes to what many people regarded as ‘slavery’ type contracts in English football.
